Direct Support Professional – Individualized Residential Alternative (IRA)
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for providing training and support in Activities of Daily Living to individuals residing in OPWDD certified homes. The Individualized Residential Alternative (IRA) Direct Support Professional (DSP) will provide training and support in the ability to work independently and act as an advocate for each consumer in regard to his/her individual rights, interests, needs and desires for services and community integration.
The DSP will display mature judgment in all areas including, but not limited to maintaining confidentiality and handling emergencies, is sensitive to consumers’ needs, as well as, realistic and perceptive of their skills and abilities. DSP’s will also pass medication to consumers as required in the MARS. The staff member must be certified in AMAP or has the ability to achieve AMAP certification. Interacts with others in a manner that will assist consumers in adjusting or developing the appropriate social skills necessary for successful community living. Serves as a positive role model in regard to appearance, hygiene, behavior, temperament, language and dress in all situations whether in the consumer home and in the community. Establishes a rapport and relates professionally with consumers, families, correspondents, peers, co-workers, supervisors and other service providers.
Minimal requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid New York State driver’s license with a clean driving record. Clearance from the NYS Child Abuse Registry, Medicaid Exclusions List and Justice Center and OPWDD background check. Experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
