Learning

Independence

We teach people of all ages the skills they will need to live their life to the best of their ability. One way we do this is to focus on a person’s ability not disability. Consumers of our services and programs are at work every day here in our community. Living life with quality and independent lifestyles built with our encouragement and support. This focus remains at the forefront of the E. John Gavras Center’s work to assist individuals with developmental and physical disabilities and their families. Sixty-six years ago in Auburn NY, a caring community and its leadership built the E. John Gavras Center so that this community’s children would have access to local services to help them overcome special needs or challenges they may face in life; helping them to achieve the highest quality of life. Over a decade ago services expanded to include school age children and adults creating a continuum of care for individuals as they transition through critical life stages.

Day Habilitation Bowling Picnic

Each year the Gavras Center Day Habilitation Program holds our bowling season at Starlite Lanes in Auburn from April to October. Here are some awesome photos from our annual Bowling Picnic held on August 7th 2019 at Emerson Park.

This gives us a chance to honor each bowler for their bowling season achievements by receiving a custom Gavras Center bowling T-Shirt as their award as well as some wonderful food and dessert. Thank you to all participants and staff for making this a great success!

The E. John Gavras Center Has Expanded!

Nearly three years and $1.8 million later, we are celebrating the progress of our expansion project. The ribbon-cutting ceremony highlighted improvement, including a larger motor skills area, additional classrooms and a new playground. Some aspects of the project were cosmetic. The front of the building has new signage, and landscaping work improved the South Street property's appearance. Click here for images and more details regarding this project.

Preschool Sensory Garden

The E. John Gavras Center would like to thank A.C. Scapes LLC for the design and coordination help.  Delta Chi Fraternity from Hobart William Smith College along with our board members, staff and family volunteers had a great time building the Preschool Sensory Garden.  The garden is designed to provide different colors along with various tactile experiences to our preschool children. The sensory garden runs along our preschool bike trail and we highly encourage you to come by to check it out!

Keep an eye on your mailbox! These will be showing up in the next few days. Any amount will help toward completing our Preschool expansion project and will surely brighten the educational experiences of the children enrolled. We cannot thank the community enough for their generosity and support throughout the years as well as currently. We strive to make a difference in the lives of those we provide services to, and because of you, we work to continue to do so!
